Awareness, Treatment and Control of Hypertension in urban Korean Hypertensive patients

Abstract

|
Objectives: To validate the compliance of patients to the treatment of hypertension in an urban area of Korea,
we investigated the awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension of patients of this area.
Methods: We surveyed 315 adults (173 males, 142 females) residing around Kuri City, Korea, whose systolic or
diastolic blood pressures were over 140 or 90 mmHg respectively, and those who were taking anti-hypertensive
therapy were also included. They were the candidates for the annual health check-up. Their median age was 56
years old (range: 27-81 years old). And the information on health behaviors related to hypertension was collected
using a structured questionnaire.
Results: Only 64.8% (204/315) of them were aware of their hypertension. Of them 57.4% (117/204) of patients
answered that they were taking anti-hypertensive therapy. Among them 67.5% were taking drug therapy alone, 7.7%
were taking non-drug therapies such as exercise, weight reduction and low salt diet, and 24.8% were using both
types of treatment. Among patients with hypertension, only 66.7% measured blood pressure regularly and 63.9%
took anti-hypertensive drugs continuously. No more than 27.8% of patients knew the name of the drugs administered.
Much of 89.5% of subjects were aware of the cardiovascular risk of hypertension. However only 23.9% (28/117)
of patients who had taken therapy maintained their systolic and diastolic blood pressures under 140 and 90 mmHg
respectively.
Conclusions: In spite of a comparatively high awareness of the risk of hypertension, the control of hypertension
was quite unsatisfactory in this area.
